This book has haunted me for many years since I first read it over 20 years ago, so I recently reread it. A 40ish Jewish intellectual who writes college term papers for a living and can read people’s minds is the protagonist. The ability to read minds has been more of a curse than a blessing though. However, his powers are fading and soon he will lose the ability altogether. It really makes you think about the consequences of having this ability. Spooky and uplifting at the same time.

The protagonist David Selig was born with the gift of reading minds, but finds around the age of forty that his gift is fading. This story is pretty much summed up in that one sentence, and from there we have flashbacks to his past when the power was strong broken with interludes in the present.
The problem is, David is never a sympathetic character, past or present. He starts out shallow and finished shallow, never exerting any self control over his gift to better himself, and mourning it pathetically and placidly as it fades. His relationship with his sister was horrible from childhood, where he made it unbearable for her, through his life. It did intrigue me that his sister only seemed interested in his as his power faded, but her motive seemed more to rub it in his face than any actual familial concern.
There are a few really good parts, such as David's interview with the child psychologist, and only being 200 pages it is a very quick read, but don't expect too much insight into David or any of the other characters. Silverberg is a master of SF, but I can only give this three stars for the unique idea and nothing for the actual content.
A quick descent from skilled mind-reading to bumbling - to being a normal person. A born-again experience for David Selig. Interesting journey - especially the contrast between his personal weakness with regard to his gift versus that of Tom Nyquist who's truly a monster with his own gift. I'd be more glad to have met David - but can certainly see where his clutching need to connect and inability to do so leave him so ofthen isolated. I bounced through several of the essays and letter-writing exercises - but when David speaks his experience most directly - his words are powerful expressions of how close we can be to each other and still be alone. And how terrified of oneself and silence a person can be "Silence will become my mother tongue."
an amazing book. SF that is on more Catcher in the Rye then flying saucers in the sky. I can't believe I almost missed reading this book.
Interesting study, valid on many levels at once. Reminds me somewhat of M. Scott Peck's stripping away. What are our motives? Where does 'the other' fit into our world?
Definitely one of my top Robert Silverberg novels. They say that he knew his creativity output was really beginning to wane and that inspired him to write this novel.
This is one of my favorite novels of all time. It's got that weird tinge of the time in which it was written, which seems to add to the odd feeling conveyed by the narrator. This is a story about a telepath losing his ability. It's a man telling his story of his life and how he is settling into his age. I highly recommend it.
As someone struggling with a chronic disease, I found this book very compelling. What happens when what has been both your life's bane as well as your defining feature goes away? Are you relieved? Saddened? Off-kilter?
