At the height of the Angelique series I was between 8 and 10. In those days these books, and the films based on them, were considered very risqué so they were out of my reach, so to speak (this is when something called 'parental authority' still existed). By today's standards I consider them almost innocuous, where sex is concerned.I cannot understand why these books are catalogued as 'bodice ripping,' Harlequin-like literature. Obviously, they are not Shakespeare, but they are very far from being in the afore-mentioned category. I read light Harlequin romance novels when I was young (who didn't). Trust me, there IS a marked difference.
For me, Angelique is the French version of Scarlett O'Hara in the sense that she is a strong, courageous, determined woman, undeterred by adversity, even though her morals leave something to be desired (like Scarlett's). But that is what makes her fascinating and realistic. Are the books over the top, at times? Certainly. Aren't so many modern adventure novels over the top, too? Douglas Preston/Lincoln Child, anyone?
Someone mentioned that these books are very politically incorrect. I suppose they are, for some. So what? Surely the younger generation does not suggest that we burn all books that "offend" their tender sensitivities, like the Nazis did in their time? I strongly advise younger readers to read these books with an open mind. These books are 50+ years old, but very enjoyable, nonetheless. And the historical info is much better than anything taught in schools, these days.
Of course, those young readers whose "principles" are just too fragile to risk reading anything that was written more than ten years ago might want to skip the Angelique series and, instead, stick to Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire, etc. I assure said readers that nothing contained in that kind of literature will upset their comfort zone, or challenge their intellect (such as it is) in any way.

Angelique in Love Book 5 Sergeanne Golon 9780553126464 Books Reviews
Volume 1 is more than I expected....it takes Angelique, the main character, from childhood to an arranged marriage ,which is the happiest time of her life, and then she is plunged into the lowest depths of her life. A must read if you want to read one of the best series written!
I cannot say enough about Angelique In Barbary! I have read it three times! It's that good....(so sorry the last 2 books in the series haven't been translated from French yet! ) By the way, re-reading it I see so much I missed the first two times, and it still holds my attention!
EXCELLENT SERIES. BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN
One of the best historical novels ever written, in my opinion. Originally published in the 1970s in English. You will love them. Having the whole set is even better, in chronological order. The tale of a beautiful peasant girl who falls prey to a nobleman and all the follies that happen over a period of years. Enjoy!
Translated from the French, out of print book. It is available in an ebook IN FRENCH but not in English. Prices vary from $30 to $50 to obtain even a paperback copy. Complex Story - I recommend only the first six books of the series. Since the 1970s edition, I have read these several times.
One of the best historical novels ever, taking us to 17th century France. The innocent Angélique de Sancé, daughter of an impoverished regional nobleman, begins a journey that touches on the lives of rich and poor, the highest and the lowest. She is a survivor of extraordinary ordeals, full of courage and pragmatism while never losing her spark of humanity despite being exposed to human nature at its most untrustworthy. Love, politics and history; men and women all fall in love with this book, with its unsinkable heroine.
Caution If you have Angelique, this is the second half of that book.
Some printing history, in France, the books Angelique and Angelique and the King were published as Angelique. In USA, these were the two books. Angelique is about 750 pages and Angelique and the King about 500. In English paperback Angelique is divided further The Road To Versailles starts on chapter 51 of the larger book Angelique.
So, if you are aware that the book was split, you could be getting a duplicate of the second half.
My review is only about this division of the book Angelique is one of the first historical novels I had read (once I graduated from The Three Musketeers) and my love of historical fiction stems from those earlier readings. I am rereading these books and will review them as I work through them.
