I like Sanford's style. They're usually quick, smart reads that leave you mostly satisfied. This one wasn't any different story wise. This is the first Sanford book I've bought for my Kindle tho, and I have to say, the formatting was AWFUL!!!! Someone needs to clean this one up in a big way.

I love to read Virgil Flowers crime stories. They really do keep me turning the pages. A lot of time the ending of books are a let down but not this book, it just kept on chugging.
I can't wait to read the next one.

A series of bizarre murder cases is handed to Virgil. He follows the clues to a heinous crime committed in Vietnam at the end of the war.

The back story seems to be confusing and some people are not who they seem to be. But the pieces finally fall into place and Virgil finds that it goes all the way to the federal level.
I never read Mr. Sandford Virgil Flowers book in order. This story is clear and concise therefore you as the reader can follow and understand the picture painted by Mr. Standford in terms of a plot. He makes you understand what has happened and almost what will happen in the future. Sometimes I have a better view of Mr. Flowers in terms of what he must do to correct a person's error in judgment. When reading his books you almost can truly see the actors/ characters of the story. I love a book that becomes real.
Great suspense mystery, but much closer to an adventure mystery like the Prey series than the first Virgil Flowers book was. The last third was by far the best, but the slower first two thirds was necessary to set up the last third. I really wish he would stop having all of his characters take the Lord's name in vain so often -- clearly this is Sanford's problem, as it spans across every one of his characters. Now what are the odds in real life? About one on ten million, that all these diverse people all use the exact same curse words and exclamations? Hardly.
People are dying. What they have in common reaches back decades and half a world away. Virgil Flowers has his work cut out for him on this case as no one is who they seem to be. I wasn't sure who were the victims and who was perpetrating the crimes and apparently Virgil wasn't either. It was a good story line and in the second book of the Virgil Flowers series I'm getting to know him and even like him. All quite readable and enjoyable to the end. Being from the Midwest but now living in New England I find the use of the setting effective. I've seen the rain move in and can almost smell the storm coming as Sanford writes it.
Virgil Flowers has the highest rate of closed cases of all the agents in the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA). But he's no superhero. Virgil makes mistakes. He sometimes misreads suspects and jumps to conclusions. He misses clues. And it's those mistakes that help propel the action forward at a fast clip in Heat Lightning. The novel is the second in what so far have been ten books in John Sandford's outstanding Virgil Flowers series.

Sandford's writing is addictive. His characters are unfailingly interesting. The plots in his novels are always complex, and sometimes devilishly so. The dialogue is crisp and sounds natural. And, at least in the Virgil Flowers series, it's sometimes funny.

Here, for example, is Virgil speaking with a bored young Vietnamese woman he has just met in the course of his investigation into a series of murders.

"'St. Paul would be a nice place to live if you had something to do. I don't have anything to do,'" the young woman remarks.

"'There's always sex,' Virgil said. 'You're away from home, where nobody knows you. You could indulge all your sexual fantasies and nobody would ever find out.'

"'But who would I sleep with?'

"'We could put a notice in the paper, ask for volunteers.'"

Virgil being Virgil, we can be confident that he will end up in bed with this young woman, who is, of course, extremely attractive. In fact, Virgil is likely to fall in love with her. He has a habit of doing that.

When others refer to Virgil, he is frequently called "that f---ing Virgil Flowers." The man does stand out!

The case that has brought Virgil together with this young woman involves a series of murders connected in some way with an event in Vietnam in 1975, immediately following the departure of the last US troops. Two veterans of the war have been found dead of gunshots, propped up against Vietnam War monuments in small Minnesota towns. They both have lemons stuffed in their mouths. Virgil's assignment is to track down the killers quickly enough to prevent any further killings.

As the action unfolds, a constellation of powerful forces and other seemingly unrelated players enter the stage. The CIA. The Vietnamese government. The Department of Homeland Security. The Red Lake Ojibwe. And the governor of Minnesota. Even a careful reader is likely to have difficulty predicting the course of events. As I said, John Sandford's plots are sometimes devilishly clever.

Seems like a few people picked up on the different writing style and minor plotting issues in the first Flowers novel. I personally liked it, but this second flowers book is noticeably better and I'd like to think it could turn around some of the 1-star reviews from his last effort.

We have professional military-type killings, spies with CIA ties, and an interesting backstory from the final days of the Vietnam war. All of this is well done and still feels like Sandford at the helm (even if apparently he has a co-author with the flowers books, and even though the story and characters are a bit outside of Sandford's usual).

It just shows how well he writes... he does soldiers and spies better than some authors who make this stuff their bread and butter. There are no false notes, everything feels realistic and dramatic right up until the end, where there's a fairly implausible (but very satisfying) finishing touch, after all the action winds down.

If you still don't like Flowers books after this one, you can probably safely ignore all of them.
