One never knows how our lives will turn out. Nor what it takes to walk into the path of our destiny. The New Jerusalem by Yerusalem Work is a short story about life, choices, and destiny. Jerusalem, a beautiful young Ethiopian librarian, attended a second annual interfaith picnic at Heartland Park in Annandale, VA, along with her boyfriend, Yohannes (John). Every culture and faith was represented at this event from Muslim and Jew to Christian. As you look from right to left, you will see beautiful colors and apparel representing their country from hijab and kippah to galabiyya. Everyone was not only enjoying themselves by interacting with each other, but the smell of different foods filled the air - from doro wat (chicken stew), lamb kabobs, kosher hamburgers and hot dogs, baba ghanoush (eggplant), and desserts from rice pudding to baklava. Jerusalem was enjoying herself until Yohannes embarrassed her by his behavior with a woman at the picnic. This act led Jerusalem to her destiny and a world that she never knew existed.As I read The New Jerusalem by Yerusalem Work, I found the story to be interesting because of the message and the essence of the mixture of the interfaith elements, from food to apparel. In today's society we should be able to be a blessing to each other and share our time, faith, and food together, just like The New Jerusalem displays. At the end of the day, we are all human beings and I love how Yerusalem Work showed that anything can be responsible for guiding us onto the path of our calling. I loved how The New Jerusalem conveys this message.
